PITTSBURGH — The Consortium for the Educational Advancement of Travel Instruction will host a conference here in April with speakers and sessions covering how to teach students with disabilities life skills and give them a sense of independence through travel instruction.
The Consortium for the Educational Advancement of Travel Instruction was created to enhance the knowledge and skills of those professionals who are teaching travel skills to people with disabilities. The conference, called “Working Together: Building Bridges Towards Independence,” will be held April 4 and 5.
Speakers scheduled to present at the conference include:
• Barbara Minzenberg, Ph.D., deputy secretary, Office of Child Development & Early Learning, Pennsylvania Departments of Education and Public Welfare
• Wendy Ross, M.D., developmental and behavioral pediatrician at the Center for Pediatric Development and Autism Inclusion Resources
• Dona Sauerberger, certified orientation and mobility specialist
• Richard Welsh, Ph.D., former president, Pittsburgh Vision Services; certified orientation and mobility specialist; and author
Topics covered during the sessions will include strategies for conducting a community travel evaluation, and instruction on pedestrian safety skills, street crossings, social skills and public transit. Other discussions will focus on how to provide travel-related skills within a student’s curriculum to prepare him or her for life after high school, as well as answers to basic questions when considering establishing a travel instruction program.
Travel instructors, transportation professionals, educators and families are among those encouraged to attend.
