EPA, CARB certify Cummins' new school bus ratings

Officials say the engine manufacturer will begin production of the new ratings for its ISB6.7 unit this month. The new ratings for the ISB6.7 are certified at 0.20g oxides of nitrogen per brake horsepower (hp) hour without the use of emissions credits, and they include offerings of 220 hp with 520 lb.-ft. of torque and 250 hp with 660 lb.-ft. of torque.

Calif. agency to award $1M in grants for alt-fuel bus projects

Of the $1 million, $496,696 will go to Kings Canyon Unified School District in Reedley, and the rest will go to the San Diego Air Pollution Control District as part of the California Air Resources Board’s Advanced Technology Demonstration Project initiative. Kings Canyon’s grant money will fund two eTrans all-electric school buses, which will be among the buses the district loans out for trial operation at other school districts.

Researchers engineer E. coli to make fuels

Officials at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Joint BioEnergy Institute have engineered the first strains of the bacteria that can digest switchgrass biomass and synthesize its sugars into advanced biofuels to replace gasoline, diesel and jet fuels.
