NEWARK VALLEY, N.Y. — A high school student helped to bring a runaway school bus to a safe stop after the driver suffered a heart attack.

On March 6, Ken Card, a 69-year-old driver for Newark Valley School District, was stricken while driving his morning route. According to newspaper reports, he managed to slow down and was pulling the bus to the side of the road when he lost consciousness.

At that point, 15-year-old Julie Corson ran to the front of the bus and dislodged Card’s foot from the accelerator pedal and used her hands to press down the brake.

After the bus was stopped, two other students went to Card’s aid while Corson radioed the bus garage for help. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene. Card, who lapsed in and out of consciousness while being attended by the students, died a short time later.

Corson told reporters that she knew what to do because she received bus safety training each year.
