TUCSON, Ariz. — The transportation department at Amphitheater Public Schools has completed 250 consecutive days of driving without a moving violation, equivalent to over 2 million miles.

To congratulate the team on setting this district record, Superintendent Dr. Vicki Balentine and Executive Manager of Operational Support Doug Aho grilled and served a steak lunch to over 160 drivers and attendants, as well as garage and office staff, in March.

After the transportation department’s last streak of 154 consecutive days ended in November 2006, Balentine and Aho challenged the staff to reach 200 days, with the steak lunch as a reward. The department reached 250 violation-free days on Feb. 19.

“We are very proud of our transportation staff; they do a remarkable job ensuring the safe travels of our students every day,” Balentine said.

The district’s fleet has over 130 buses, all but one of which use biodiesel, a renewable energy source.

In total, the fleet travels approximately 9,500 miles each day on 110 bus routes, as well as field trips and athletic excursions.
