Baran began his career in student transportation in 2012 as a part-time school bus driver, working a 4.25-hour daily route. “What started as a side job quickly grew into a passion and a long-term career,” he said.
Over time, he moved from part-time to full-time driving and earned his certification as a State of Delaware Certified School Bus Driver Trainer, laying the foundation for future leadership opportunities.
In January 2023, Baran joined Odyssey Charter School as a dispatcher. His growth within the organization came quickly, advancing from dispatcher to specialist and then to transportation supervisor. Today, he manages a fleet of 34 buses and leads a team of more than 40 employees, including drivers and aides. In his role, Baran is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient operations while supporting staff and collaborating closely with school leadership.

“I begin my day at 4 a.m. by evaluating staffing needs and preparing for daily operations,” Baran said. By 6 a.m., he is at the bus yard greeting drivers and aides as they arrive.
Building relationships is one of the most meaningful parts of his role. “Having the opportunity to connect with each team member at the start of their day and build positive working relationships is something I enjoy.”

Throughout the day, Baran supports both arrival and dismissal, manages field phone and radio communications, trains new drivers, leads professional development meetings, and works alongside school administrators and other stakeholders. The variety of responsibilities keeps him engaged and reinforces the importance of teamwork across the organization.
Confidence, Community, and the Road Ahead
One of the most important lessons Baran has learned came when he first stepped into a supervisory role. Early on, he believed leadership required a single, consistent approach. “I approached situations with a very one-size-fits-all mindset, thinking that consistency required rigidity,” he said.
Over time, his perspective shifted. He learned that effective leadership often exists in the gray areas, where flexibility and understanding are just as important as structure. This growth has allowed him to lead with greater empathy while still maintaining accountability and clear expectations.
“He has the best work ethic of anyone I know,” said one of Baran’s co-workers, Tina Pine. “I have worked in transportation for 38 years as a bus driver and as a transportation specialist. I am retiring this year. I am glad I had the chance to work with Josh and to retire with him as my supervisor.”
When offering advice to others entering the student transportation industry, Baran emphasizes the value of listening. “Take the time to listen and learn from those who have already found success,” he said.

Baran credits much of his professional development to guidance from colleagues in neighboring districts, leaders across the state of Delaware, and mentors within Odyssey Charter School. Small lessons and everyday insights, he believes, often make the biggest difference.
Looking ahead, Baran feels confident in the path he is on. Since entering the industry, his goal had always been to become a transportation supervisor, and he once considered starting his own bus contracting business. Now, in a role that aligns with his goals and values, he feels fulfilled. “Especially within a school community that is so supportive, I feel confident in the path I’m on,” he said.
Outside of work, Baran’s passion for transportation extends into his personal interests. He enjoys photography, visiting independent coffee shops, classic television, arcades, and technology. He is also an avid collector of school bus emblems and literature, with more than 100 items.
Preserving and learning from the history of the profession, he said, is something he truly enjoys.
