Video: District plans bus loop redesign to improve safety

HYDE PARK, N.Y. — Hyde Park Central School District (CSD) has proposed the reconstruction of the bus loop at Haviland Middle School (HMS) to address safety issues.
Designs were developed following two public input meetings held in August and September. A final session on the proposal will be held this week.
The district has posted an information page about the project, providing links to minutes from the public meetings, a frequently-asked questions page, and a video that illustrates the district's motivations for the redesign.
As the video illustrates, the HMS bus loop does not allow for the orderly dismissal of students. School officials say buses are not lined up in the correct order and students end up running around the loop looking for their bus among the vehicles.
The district's high school has a bus dismissal system in place that allows the buses to line up in the same order every day and pull out of the bus loop without backing up. About 1,500 students are loaded in around 8 minutes, while at the middle school, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to load 1,000 students, according to the video.

According to the district's information page, officials plan to address the concerns raised about balancing the historic aspects of HMS with student and staff safety.
