Stop-arm cameras violate surveillance ban, critics say

Those opposed to the newly-installed cameras on Iowa City (Iowa) Community School District school buses say they violate the city’s traffic camera ban, and systems like this are designed to create revenue, not improve safety. Iowa City Attorney Eleanor Dilkes disagrees, saying that the law bans traffic cameras only for “qualified traffic violations” and stop-arm violations are not included.

App targets distracted driving by monitoring phone use

With the TextGuard app, a manager is alerted if a driver uses the phone when the vehicle's speed is above 9 mph. The SeatbeltGuard device, which is installed in the vehicle, also offers such features as real-time GPS tracking, speed monitoring, geo-fencing and reverse geo-fencing.

Bus assistant resigns after being accused of slapping autistic child

Pasco County (Fla.) Schools bus assistant James Lambert was charged with two counts of child abuse after allegedly striking a 10-year-old boy for cursing. The district had planned to start the process of terminating his employment, according to a spokeswoman. Lambert had been reprimanded multiple times in the past; however, in none of those instances was he accused of hitting a child.

Driver, monitor resign after special-needs student left on school bus
