PulseTech Products’ SP-5 provides 5 watts of power in a solar panel, and offers renewable energy for vehicles that are unable to hook up to outlets, according to the company. The SP-5 also replaces power loss from electrical accessories that occurs even when the ignition is turned off, and its patented Pulse Technology removes damaging sulfate crystals from the battery plates, company officials said.

Coupled with a previous grant, the total of $2.2 million will lead to the development of six buses that will be deployed in Torrance Unified School District, Kings Canyon Unified School District and Napa Valley Unified School District.

Escondido Union High School District is testing the ElecTruck Drive System from TransPower for one month. The system has been retrofitted on a Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX unit, and Director of Transportation Robert Berkstresser says data being tracked during the pilot period include the battery stability, motor efficiency and the reserve percentage of energy after a route.
