Diesel price down to lowest point in 2 years

The average on-highway diesel price in the U.S. was down to $3.801 per gallon as of Monday, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The latest average is the lowest since July 30, 2012, when it was $3.796 per gallon.

Solar-powered solution extends school bus battery life

PulseTech Products’ SP-5 provides 5 watts of power in a solar panel, and offers renewable energy for vehicles that are unable to hook up to outlets, according to the company. The SP-5 also replaces power loss from electrical accessories that occurs even when the ignition is turned off, and its patented Pulse Technology removes damaging sulfate crystals from the battery plates, company officials said.

Clinton Global Initiative partner wins grant to build electric school buses

The Commissioners of the California Energy Commission approved a grant to National Strategies for $1.4 million for an all electric school bus demonstration program in California. Coupled with a previous grant, the total of $2.2 million will lead to the development of six buses that will be deployed in Torrance Unified School District, Kings Canyon Unified School District and Napa Valley Unified School District.

Hydraulic hybrid system offered for buses

Lightning Hybrids has released a new version of its hydraulic hybrid system for certain types of school and commercial buses. Hydraulic pumps/motors and an accumulator (power storage unit) are added to existing engines to store braking energy and use it to accelerate the vehicle.

California district pilots electric drive system on bus

Escondido Union High School District is testing the ElecTruck Drive System from TransPower for one month. The system has been retrofitted on a Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX unit, and Director of Transportation Robert Berkstresser says data being tracked during the pilot period include the battery stability, motor efficiency and the reserve percentage of energy after a route.

Push for electric school buses in Massachusetts

Gov. Deval Patrick and his administration are investing in three programs to support alternative fuel vehicles and related infrastructure across Massachusetts, including the launch of an electric school bus pilot program. The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources will provide $1.8 million in grants for eight electric school buses with vehicle-to-grid capability.

Lion Bus to develop all-electric school bus

President Marc Bedard tells Journal de Montreal that the company “wanted the most energy efficient bus possible, and this project is materializing itself.” A feasibility study has been completed, and a prototype is set to be revealed in the spring, with Bedard noting that the company would ultimately like to produce 2,000 buses that would be sold on a 10-year scale.
