Iowa school bus rear-ended by teen driver

A Netherlands Reformed Christian School bus stops to pick up students Tuesday morning and is rear-ended by a 2010 Chevy Impala driven by a 16-year-old boy. The driver and 15 children on the school bus at the time are unharmed, but the two people in the car have serious injuries, officials say.

District changes safety policies for special-needs students after driver arrest

Canyons School District in Sandy, Utah, will no longer allow bus drivers to buckle and unbuckle seat belts and restraints after a former bus driver was charged with allegedly molesting two special-needs students. The district will also randomly select buses and review security video daily, as opposed to only when concerns are raised.

David Friedman, acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, describes feeling “powerless” as his son stepped aboard a yellow bus for the first time. But, Friedman writes, he had checked the numbers: “School buses are the safest way to get to school, even safer than in the family car.”

District scrambles to staff bus routes after driver no-shows

About a dozen Boston Public Schools bus routes were unstaffed Monday morning, leaving 400 students stranded. The bus contractor dispatched supervisors to drive buses Tuesday morning, “due to a continued shortage of union drivers willing to work,” but was able to cover all routes. The no-shows are related to a labor dispute that led to a strike last October.

Alabama district debuts state’s first propane school buses

Mobile County Public Schools rolls out its 30 Blue Bird Propane Vision buses, purchased to support its community outreach campaign, “It Starts With Us.” Each bus will displace about 40,000 gallons of diesel and emit 150,000 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide over its lifetime, according to Blue Bird.
