FORT VALLEY, Ga. — Over 1,600 Blue Bird employees rallied to support the Central Georgia Chapter of the American Heart and Stroke Association and its 2014 Heart Walk. Blue Bird led the local chapter’s employee donation segment by contributing over $17,000, in addition to becoming one of the top three fundraising companies in Central Georgia, company officials said.

After setting an initial goal of $10,000, the company surpassed the target within eight weeks.

The company’s donation was raised through employee and community contributions, bake sales, dunking booths and raffles for premium items. This year’s donation highlights Blue Bird’s continuing commitment to the American Heart and Stroke Association and the Central Georgia community, company officials said. In 2013, Blue Bird donated just over $14,000 to the local chapter. Within the community, Blue Bird participates and supports numerous charities through volunteerism and corporate and employee contributions, as well as contributions from its annual supplier golf tournament.

Locally, the Central Georgia chapter of the American Heart and Stroke Association provides research assistance, CPR training and educational support, according to Blue Bird.

“We are delighted to support the American Heart and Stroke Association. It is a terrific organization and we’re pleased that our employees’ donations can help fight this terrible disease,” said Phil Horlock, president and CEO of Blue Bird Corp. “The enthusiasm and generosity displayed by Blue Bird employees is a testament to our community-oriented workforce.”

“The American Heart and Stroke Association thanks Blue Bird employees for all of their hard work [and] dedication to the Central Georgia Heart Walk,” said Kellie Thigpen McKenzie, regional director for the American Heart and Stroke Association. “With the support of generous donors like Blue Bird, we are able to better fight the number one killer of all Americans. Congratulations on surpassing your initial goal and raising over $17,000.”
