Video of school bus driver texting while driving leads to policy change
After a bus driver is caught on video texting while driving students, Prince George’s County (Md.) Public Schools adds to its policy an amendment that would lead to a driver being suspended, demoted or terminated for the offense.
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — School bus drivers here may now lose their jobs for texting while driving students, following video taken by students of one bus driver doing just that, NBC News4 reports.
The bus driver who was recorded texting while driving students is still employed due to a loophole in county policy, but from now on, drivers who are caught face suspension or being fired, according to the news source.
After NBC News4 ran a story last week with the video and photos of the driver texting, Prince George’s County Public Schools added an amendment addressing misuse of a phone on a bus to its transportation discipline handbook, the news source reports. A letter “F” will be added for texting while driving students. If caught, a driver could be recommended for suspension, demotion or termination, according to NBC News4.
The new language has been distributed to all bus drivers and handbooks with the policy change are being printed and will be distributed in January, the news source reports.
