Teen Takes Control of School Bus in Crash

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A teenager on board a school bus here stepped in to assist a driver who was thrown from her seat and injured after the bus was hit by an SUV, News 12 reports.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning as the bus was headed for Jackson Memorial High School, according to the news source. Evan VanArsdale, 16, told News 12 that the driver was down in the stairwell of the bus, up against the door, and was stuck. VanArsdale added that he was able to grab the bus's emergency brake and make a radio call to dispatch before the bus safely stopped on the side of the road.
The driver of the bus was taken to the hospital, treated, and then released, News12 reports. No other injuries were reported.
VanArsdale told the news source that he was later commended for his actions by his principal, the Jackson School District superintendent, and his mother.
