WACO, Texas — Police said that a 6-year-old student was hit and injured by her school bus after getting off at a bus stop here on Friday, KCEN TV reports.

Police told the news source that the incident occurred at around 3:50 p.m. at a school bus stop near the Sendero Springs neighborhood. The bus driver had accidentally hit the Castleman Creek Elementary School student, and then drove about a block and a half before stopping. Midway Independent School District told KCEN TV that the student was transported to a children’s medical center after being taken to a local hospital.

Mandy Johnson, the principal for Castleman Creek Elementary School, released a statement on Friday, according to the news source, informing the school community and parents of the incident. Johnson said in the statement that the district appreciates everyone's concern for the remaining 14 students on board who were returned to school and reunited with their parents, as well as the continued thoughts and prayers for the student who was injured.

Johnson sent a letter to parents on Monday, KCEN TV reports, saying that the student who was injured “has been a brave trooper during treatment over the weekend,” and that the student’s mother will be visiting her daughter's class this week “to let her classmates know that their friend is okay.” Johnson also added in the letter that the district is providing additional counseling services for students, and the district’s teachers and staff will spend time reviewing and discussing school bus safety with students during the week.
