RICHMOND, Va. — A student here who was hit by a car after exiting his school bus last week was severely injured, CBS 6 reports.

A Richmond Public Schools bus was stopped at a bus stop located at an intersection and was deboarding students on the afternoon of Jan. 13, according to the news source. A school district spokesperson told CBS 6 that the 15-year-old boy got off the bus safely and must have been struck by the car while crossing the street with other students some time after the bus pulled away. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A father who lives in the area told the news source that he was surprised that similar incidents don’t happen more often, since there is no crosswalk painted on the road where the stop is located. He added that there is often a lot of traffic on the road and it can be hard to see cars coming because the street is lined with trees.

Police told CBS 6 that charges are pending for the motorist who was involved in the accident.
