FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — A 6-year-old girl was dragged by a school bus for nearly 1 mile on Monday afternoon, FOX 8 reports.

Chelsea Klepzig’s parents told the news source that her grandmother was waiting for her to deboard the bus when the door closed on Chelsea's arm, and that the bus driver was supposed to wait for her to cross in front of the bus to the other side of the road. However, the bus driver didn’t wait for her to move, Chelsea’s grandmother told FOX 8.  

Chelsea’s parents added that she held onto the bus with her arm stuck in the door for nearly 1 mile, with her feet and legs being dragged. Chelsea’s grandmother followed the bus to the next stop and then saw the doors open and Chelsea fall to the ground. Chelsea’s parents also told the news source that she suffered bruises and scratches from the incident.

Theo Helm, chief of staff for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, told FOX 8 that the bus driver was a substitute driver who had worked for the school system since 2000, and has been suspended without pay and recommended for dismissal. Helm added that there were 17 students aboard the bus at the time, but as far as the district knows, none of them witnessed the incident. The state Highway Patrol told the news source that no charges have been filed and that the incident is still under investigation.
