HOUSTON — Two school bus drivers here were able to evacuate 30 students as a school bus caught fire on Friday, and were called heroes by the students and the school district, KHOU reports.

Bus driver Sammy Agunbiade rushed the students off the bus when he started hearing popping sounds and smelled something strange, according to the news source. A second driver, Drew Langworthy, heard the calls for help and rushed to the bus to bring the students farther away right as it exploded into flames, KHOU reports.

Christopher Juntti, the executive director of operations at Spring Branch Independent School District, shared this tweet, which shows the condition of the bus:

Agunbiade and Langworthy were honored by the district on Monday evening and called heroes. Agunbiade said he was just protecting his “family,” and that he just did what he was supposed to do, according to the news source. Student Miranda Essing described Agunbiade as “just a genuinely great guy” and added that he “saved our lives by doing what he did.”
