GRASS LAKE, Mich. — A school bus driver here who has worked for the same school district her entire career will retire after 50 years of service, MLive reports.
At 80, Marilyn Loveland turned in the keys to her bus and retired this year, according to the news source. The Grass Lake Community Schools held a reception for her on Saturday at George Long Elementary School, according to the transportation department page of the school district’s website. Loveland was also honored before a football game, MLive reports.
Loveland started driving a school bus in 1966 at the urging of two women who were driving school buses at the time, according to MLive. What was then a predominantly male group of school bus drivers has now turned into a group with only two men. Other changes that Loveland has seen over the years include the addition of two-way radios on buses, and buses changing from a double-clutch to automatic transmission and GPS.
Doug Moeckel, the director of transportation, community, and cooperative services for the district, told the news source that Loveland rarely took a day off and “was dependable in everything she did.”
