School Bus Driver Dies After Head-on Collision
A county prosecutor in New Jersey says that the investigation is ongoing, but it appears that the bus was properly within its lane of travel when it was struck by an SUV.
COLTS NECK, N.J. — The driver of a school bus has died following a head-on collision with an SUV here on Tuesday.
According to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, a 2004 Dodge Durango traveling eastbound collided with the westbound 16-passenger school bus around 2:26 p.m.
The county prosecutor said that the investigation is ongoing, but it appeared that the school bus was properly within its lane of travel when it was struck by the Durango.
Upon impact, the bus caught fire. The county prosecutor said that the occupants were removed and transported to a hospital.
In addition to the school bus driver, an aide and one student were aboard the bus at the time of the crash. The bus driver, Lorraine Filozof, 62, died at the hospital.
The school bus aide and the student were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and were later released. The driver of the Durango, a 77-year-old man, was held overnight for observation.
The school bus is owned by Helfrich & Sons of Keansburg, New Jersey.
The Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team is conducting the investigation with assistance from area police departments.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said on Wednesday evening that no additional information was available at the time.
