Last week, a Brooklyn, N.Y., 11-year-old was struck and killed by a school bus while crossing the street. The accident happened on Thursday, February 5 around 3 p.m. in Bath Beach.
CBS News reported that footage “shows the girl starting to cross Bath Avenue in the crosswalk, appearing to have the right of way. She continues to run across the street in the crosswalk as the school bus makes a right turn from 23rd Avenue onto Bath Avenue and strikes her.”
Afterward, the school bus driver did not stop and left the scene. The driver was later pulled over by police. Authorities are continuing their investigation and said the driver may not have realized the girl had been struck.
The girl, identified as Amira Aminova, died at a nearby hospital from injuries sustained in the accident. She was only steps from her home when she was hit. A New York Times article said the girl had just left a nearby bodega, and a store employee witnessed the accident.
By Friday, the 62-year-old driver Wawa Aurelus was taken into custody and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care, officials said. He is expected to appear in court on Feb. 24.
It is not clear yet where Amira attended school.
At the end of January, another New York student was killed in Rockland County.
