NEW ORLEANS — A school bus crashed into a canal here on Thursday after the bus driver allegedly lost control of the bus, WWL TV reports.

The incident occurred at around 8 a.m. on the eastbound side of Morrison Rd., according to the news source. New Orleans Police Department told WWL TV that the driver lost control of the bus after making a U-turn when another vehicle veered into the bus’ lane, causing the bus driver to swerve onto the banks of the canal.

No students were on board at the time of the crash, and no injuries were reported, according to the news source. Officers told WWL TV that there were no citations issued to the driver or the owner of the bus.

The bus had Mississippi license plates and a registration sticker that expired in 2018, and also did not appear to have a brake tag, an inspection sticker required by school buses in New Orleans, the news source reports. Todrick Carmouche, the founder and director of Carmouche Performing Arts Academy, confirmed to WWL TV that the academy contracts its buses with a company in Mississippi.

As previously reported, New Orleans recently passed legislation that requires new regulations for school bus operators that serve the city’s public schools. The regulations include several measures intended to improve school bus safety such as new permitting, inspection, and licensing standards for school buses, and background checks and driving certificate requirements for bus drivers.

Carmouche Performing Arts Academy is not considered a public school, so its bus contractor likely won't be expected to follow the city's new regulations, according to the news source.
