New Jersey agency to fund mandatory school bus retrofits

TRENTON, N.J. — Under the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Diesel Risk Reduction Program, diesel-powered school buses in the state will have to be retrofitted with closed crankcase ventilation systems (CCVS).
The department announced earlier this month that it will provide funds to reimburse the cost of CCVS purchase and installation.
School bus owners have until July 7, 2010, to complete the retrofits. Owners must submit cost estimates to the department in advance of installation. The CCVS must be obtained from and installed by a state-authorized installer.
Buses that have a 2007 or newer engine, chassis model years 1998 and older with a 12-year retirement, and chassis model years 1990 and older with a 20-year retirement are exempt from the requirement.
