CHESTER, S.C. — A motorist was arrested for allegedly striking a mother and her 5-year-old daughter last week while they were crossing the street after the child exited her school bus.

The motorist, Danny William Dove, allegedly disregarded the warning lights and extended stop arm on the school bus and then hit the mother and daughter. He was charged with traffic violations and with failure to stop for a bus, WSOC reports. He could spend between 60 days and a year in jail if he is convicted, according to WBTV.

The mother, Ashley Caldwell, and her daughter were airlifted to the hospital, according to WSOC. Caldwell was treated and released the evening of the incident, but remained at the hospital with her daughter, who, as of the following day, was expected to be released soon, WBTV reports.

WSOC also reports that Dove was accused of holding his family captive in a Chester County home in 2007, and as part of his bond in that case, he agreed to mental health counseling and to have no contact with his wife and children.
