LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools is providing free meals to its students in need with its new Bus Stop Café, which is part of the Summer Food Service Program, The Courier-Journal reports.

The school bus, which was donated by the transportation department, is equipped with a kitchen, milk cooler, tables and chairs. The bus will travel and deliver prepared lunches to children in neighborhoods that the district was unable to reach in the past who are on a free or reduced-price meal plan during the school year.

Julia Bauscher, director of Jefferson County Public Schools’ Community Nutritional Services, told the newspaper that the bus should help the Summer Food Service Program feed at least 500 additional students per day. She said she got the idea for the Bus Stop Café by reading about a similar effort at an operation in Denver.
