UPDATE, Dec. 10: The Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed that the 13-year-old girl who jumped from a moving school bus died on Wednesday, KHOU reports.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — A student is in critical condition after she intentionally hit an emergency exit button on a school bus and jumped out onto a highway on Monday, authorities told KHOU.

Galveston County Sheriff’s officials told the news source that the bus, which was coming from an alternative education program, was driving on Interstate 45 when a 13-year-old girl hit the emergency exit button and jumped out. The girl had gotten into an argument with another girl on the bus, and the bus driver had separated them, seating one in the front of the bus and the other in the back, authorities told KHOU.

When the girl hit the button, the back door opened and the alarm sounded, and several students aboard turned toward the back door and witnessed the girl jump onto the freeway. The student was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition. She was not struck by any vehicles, the news source reports.

Officials with the Galveston Independent School District told KHOU that six students were on the bus at the time, and investigators had not yet reviewed the video surveillance footage of the incident.
