PHILADELPHIA — EPA Region 3 has awarded a $143,068 grant to Hampton Roads Clean Cities. The coalition will work with several school districts in Virginia’s Middle Peninsula to reduce the amount of exhaust emitted by their school buses.
The districts will use the funding to install diesel oxidation catalysts on 100 buses and to purchase one new, propane-powered bus.
They will also use cleaner-burning fuel in 198 buses and promote reduced school bus engine idling.
The grant was awarded as part of the EPA’s Clean School Bus USA program.
"In addition to obvious clean air and health benefits, the Clean School Bus award supports or complements many components of the effort to preserve the sensitive Dragon Run watershed in Virginia’s Middle Peninsula," said Al Christopher, executive director of Virginia Clean Cities.
