Driver training aims to boost fuel economy
Officials with EcoCargo Training say their approach teaches drivers how to cut their fuel costs without increasing drive time. The method has reportedly been taught for more than a decade in Europe and South America, and now school and transit bus drivers in the U.S. are taking part in a pilot program.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A German company with a U.S. office here is offering training that officials say teaches drivers how to cut their fuel costs without increasing drive time.
EcoCargo Training LLC’s method has reportedly been taught for more than a decade in Europe and South America, and now school and transit bus drivers in the U.S. are taking part in a pilot program.
President Hans Faulstich said that participants are achieving fuel savings of 15 percent or more.
EcoCargo’s approach combines training with vehicle monitoring technology. Experienced teachers train the drivers to understand the importance of maintenance, monitoring and their own actions in controlling the fuel consumption of the vehicle.
The company also provides drivers with a “tool box” with an assortment of techniques. Drivers then test these tools and customize them to best fit their needs.
“Our client drivers are pros,” trainer Gary Pierce said. “We don’t teach them how to drive — we take their skills to the next level.”
According to the company, the results of the one-day training program include fuel savings, fewer gear changes (reduction of wear), no increase in travel time, and reduced driver and passenger stress.
