LUNENBERG COUNTY, Va. — A school bus driver here safely evacuated students from a bus after it had overturned in a crash on Tuesday, WRIC reports.

At around 3:25 p.m., police responded to a crash involving a Kenston Forest School bus and a dump truck, according to WRIC. Police told the news source that the school bus was traveling southbound on Route 40, slowed down to make a left turn onto Fletcher Chapel Road, and then was hit from behind after the driver of the dump truck failed to stop in time, causing the bus to flip onto its side.

Police told WRIC that five of the 13 elementary school-aged students on board were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, along with the bus driver, who was also taken as a precautionary measure. The driver of the dump truck, John Grizzard, 38, was not injured in the crash, and was charged with failure to maintain control of his vehicle, the news source reports.

Philip Vannoorbeeck, a board member from Kenston Forest School, told WTVR that the driver exceeded the school's expectations by helping students evacuate the bus using the emergency exits. Vannoorbeeck added that the school is sending prayers to the families of the students who were injured.
