TOWSON, Md. — A school district here has increased the salary for school bus drivers to draw more applicants in an effort to deal with a driver shortage, WBALTV News reports.
David McCrae, the director of transportation for Baltimore County Public Schools, told the news source that he has made early recruiting of drivers one of his top priorities. As of July, the new hourly rate being offered as a starting wage to school bus drivers will be $15.42, which is an increase from the $12.94 now being offered.
Baltimore County officials told WBALTV News that even with a higher starting wage, the district will have to compete with nearby school districts that are also coping with driver shortage.
