WALLED LAKE, Mich. — A former school bus driver became the second honoree on the local school district’s “Wall of Fame.”
Naomi Smith, who passed away in 1986, shuttled students in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District for 27 years, beginning in 1943. District officials said that she was the first female school bus driver in Michigan.
“Naomi Smith was ahead of her time as a leader, role model and dedicated citizen to the Walled Lake schools and community,” said Warren Williams, a Wall of Fame committee member and former school board member.
Williams noted that Smith is still remembered as the “Guardian of Children” by second and third generations of local families.
Smith also taught adult education, co-founded a senior citizens ensemble — the Grandmas and Grandpas Band — and dedicated time to service projects throughout the community.
