Across the country, on average, a gallon of gasoline climbed from $3.34 to about $3.39. Diesel, on the other hand, fell in most regions except the Midwest, where a gallon costs a penny more than last week – still down more than 5 cents compared to the same period in 2022.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that gasoline runs about $3.39 per gallon on average across the nation. The average price of diesel fell from $4.29 to $4.28.

“The national average rose last week as the transition to summer gasoline has now started across the entire country,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Some regions are moving to the required summer gasoline in different steps than others, and the fragmentation of required blends absolutely plays a role in these price increases.”
Weekly increases might not be assured, but De Haan expects a continued upward trend throughout the spring.
“By Memorial Day, most of the nation will have transitioned to their respective required blend of fuel, and gas prices could ease, but a $4 per gallon national average remains possible by then,” he said.
