Denver district ‘stuffs the bus’ for children in need
Over the holidays, transportation and staff district-wide at Denver Public Schools donated clothes to benefit the nonprofit organization Denver Children’s Advocacy Center. Officials say the busload of items was delivered on Jan. 23, and the clothing will help more than 100 children.

DENVER — Denver Public Schools’ (DPS) transportation department helped children in need over the holiday season by collaborating with other staff members for a district-wide “Stuff the Bus” event.
Last month, DPS staffers contributed new and gently used winter clothing, including coats, hats, gloves, socks and underwear to benefit the nonprofit organization Denver Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC).
The busload of winter items was delivered to DCAC on Jan. 23, and staff members began distributing hats and gloves almost immediately. The stacks of clothing will help out more than 100 children, officials said.
“I am honored to work for a school district that demonstrates its support of local nonprofits like DCAC,” DPS Executive Director of Transportation Nicole Portee said. “The generosity of hundreds of DPS employees this past holiday season, across multiple departments, will help students and families to stay warm throughout winter.”
DCAC works to improve the lives of children traumatized by sexual abuse and violence — as well as those who are at high risk — with prevention, education and direct services. The organization’s mission is to prevent abuse, strengthen families and restore childhood.
DPS’ transportation department thanked the department of technology services and the district’s central office for serving as donation locations alongside two transportation terminals. Jesse Andrews, director of DCAC’s Assessment and Treatment Program, and Candace Wengert, DCAC volunteer coordinator, were also instrumental in coordinating and supporting the effort, officials said.
