On Wednesday, June 19, David Roenigk mowed the grass along Ekastown Road in Sarver, Penn., at the headquarters of school transportation provider W.L. Roenigk - the family business he co-owned, driving trucks and school buses.
According to Pennsylvania State Police investigators, a pickup truck driver traveling down the road swerved and struck Roenigk, 62, killing him.
The news came as a blow to Curt Macysyn, executive director of the National School Transportation Association: "NSTA is saddened to hear of the sudden passing Dave Roenigk in a tragic accident. W.L. Roenigk has been a fixture in student transportation in western Pennsylvania for many years, and we send our condolences to the Roenigk family and co-workers on their loss.”
The company, started in 1945, has long been a family affair. Dave Roenigk focused on bus driving, grounds maintenance, and upkeep of the family farm in Natrona Heights.
He was born in 1961, the son of William L. Roenigk and Jeanne Korbeck Roenigk. According to his obituary, published in The Butler Eagle, Dave "enjoyed gardening, farming, music, the (Pittsburgh) Pirates and, especially, spending time with his sons and grandchildren."
In a Facebook post, the family reported: "We are devastated to say that we have lost a beloved family member and employee today in a horrible accident. Dave Roenigk was a wonderful father, husband, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and dedicated bus driver."
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 24, at Fox Funeral Home, 410 W. Main St., in Saxonburg.
