GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Pupil transportation professionals and students from across the country were honored at the NAPT Awards Banquet on Sunday night.
In the 2007 School Bus Safety Speech Contest, first place went to Diamond Breland of New York, who came in second last year. The other top finishers were Anurag Pandey of California (second), Leanna Swain of Texas (third) and Rachel Gaylord-Miles of North Carolina (fourth).
SCHOOL BUS FLEET gave its Administrator of the Year award to Steven Kalmes of Anchorage (Alaska) School District. Kalmes is a former NAPT president and regional director, and he currently serves as chair of the association’s Professional Development Series.
Driver Larry Davis and monitor Grace Smith of New Jersey won the Blue Bird Heroism award. The team safely evacuated students from their bus when it caught on fire in March.
Sure-Lok gave its Special-Needs Award to Susan Shutrump of Ohio, one of the industry’s foremost authorities on transporting students with disabilities.
NAPT honored Pete Baxter of Indiana and Robert Pape of New York for distinguished service, and the association inducted Richard Fischer of Colorado into its Hall of Fame.
