5 Students Injured After Motorist Rear-Ends School Bus
A school bus is transporting 33 students from Dinwiddie County (Va.) Public Schools when a motorist crashes into the bus. Several students on board and the motorist suffered minor injuries.
DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. — Five students here suffered minor injuries after a motorist struck the rear end of a school bus on Monday morning, police said.
The incident occurred at around 6:45 a.m. at a bus stop on southbound Route 1 (Boylston Plank Road), WRIC reports. Police told WRIC that the driver of a 2016 Honda CRV, 76-year-old Elizabeth Overby, crashed into the bus while its stop lights were activated and its stop bar was deployed.
A total of 33 students from Dinwiddie County Public Schools were on board, the news source reports. Police told WRIC that five of the students were taken to the hospital for minor injuries after complaining of back pain. Overby was also hospitalized for minor injuries, and was later charged with following too close, WRIC reports.
Royal Gurley, the assistant superintendent for the district, told WRIC that the school bus driver responded appropriately during the incident, ensuring students were safe and assisting first responders and the transportation department.
