HOMESTEAD, Fla. — A 13-year-old girl died after she was shot on a school bus Tuesday morning, police said.
According to a Miami-Dade Police Department release, officers responded to a report of shots fired inside of a private school bus. Responding officers discovered the 13-year-old suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Officers apprehended the alleged shooter and recovered the firearm. The suspect was described as a male student.
About eight other children were on the bus at the time of the incident, including the victim's 7-year-old sibling. The other children were not injured.
The victim was airlifted to a children's hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The Miami-Dade Police Department Homicide Bureau is investigating the incident. Police said that all parties involved were transported to the Homicide Bureau for further questioning.
“The motive at this time is unknown as well as any information regarding the firearm,” the police department release said.
Authorities also noted that the school bus is not equipped with video surveillance equipment.
The 13-year-old victim was a student at Palm Glades Preparatory Middle School.
The bus was transporting students to Palm Glades and two other schools, a lawyer for one of the schools told NBC 6 South Florida. The lawyer also said that grief counselors had been called in.
