MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. — An eighth grade student here was killed and others were injured in a crash involving a school bus and truck on Wednesday, WNDU reports.
The incident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. on U.S. 31 when the bus had stopped at a railroad crossing, as required by law, according to the news source. As the bus began to accelerate, a Freightliner straight truck that was towing a trailer, driven by Tylor Perry, 26, rear-ended the bus, WNDU reports. The student who died was sitting in the left rear section of the bus.
A total of 38 students, three chaperones, and the bus driver were on board at the time of the crash. One student was airlifted to a hospital with minor injuries, while the remaining students were taken to another hospital to be treated for complaints of pain and to be reunited with their parents, according to the news source.
A parent told WNDU that the students were from Winamac Community Middle School, which is a part of the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corp. The parent added that the students were headed to see “Elf the Musical” in Warsaw.
