1 dead, dozens injured as school bus overturns
The bus, returning from a football game, is struck around midnight by a car that failed to yield at a stop sign, according to police. A 15-year-old student on the bus dies in the accident, and about 30 others are taken to hospitals.
COFFEEVILLE, Ala. — A high school student was killed when a school bus returning from a football game on Friday night was struck by a car and overturned.
Alabama state police said that a Nissan Maxima failed to yield at a stop sign in Coffeeville around midnight and collided with the bus, which rolled onto its roof.
Authorities said that 15-year-old Otties Brewer III of Silas died in the crash. About 30 other occupants of the bus and the car were injured and taken to hospitals; all were reportedly later released.
The bus was carrying members of the Southern Choctaw High School football team after a game at Flomaton High School. At the time of the crash, the bus was being escorted by a state trooper and a Choctaw County sheriff’s deputy.
Southern Choctaw head coach Jeremy Noland told the Press-Register that Brewer was the team manager.
State troopers said in a press release that they “continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash.”
