U.S. and Canadian school bus sales this year increased for the second year in a row. There were 36,073 school buses sold in 2013, compared to 32,034 units sold in 2012.

Merryman, who died on Saturday at age 89, launched his school bus business in 1967 when Thomas Built Buses was looking for a new dealer in Virginia. Today, Sonny Merryman Inc. has three locations and more than 125 employees in the state.

The school bus manufacturer presents the keys to a freshly painted 24-foot bus to Bob Votruba, founder of One Million Acts of Kindness. The bus is an upgrade from the 23-year-old bus the organization purchased in 2009 for Votruba to travel around the country, speaking to public schools, colleges, homeless shelters, hospitals and businesses, striving to inspire daily kindness, empathy and peace.

Atlantic Express to shut down at year’s end

After its unionized drivers voted down a new contract offer, the nearly 50-year-old school bus operator says it will close the business. “We gave the union our best offer, which was significantly better than what the new companies in the industry are providing,” Atlantic Express officials say in a statement. “Without this labor contract, we have no choice left but to proceed with the sale of all of the company’s assets and contracts.”

Roberts Hawaii, Ground Transport to bus students in Oahu
