Strickland has served as administrator since 2010, during which time the agency has shown support for safety-related issues in transportation, such as drunken driving prevention, and it has worked to promote school bus transportation. Deputy Administrator David Friedman will reportedly serve as acting administrator after Strickland leaves.

Riley, a former state and district director, has held the executive role for the state pupil transportation directors association since 2006. NASDPTS is now searching for a replacement for Riley, who is expected to retire in June of next year.

Bus driver defends girl from dog attack

Denise Dolcoe, a school bus driver for Fort Bend (Texas) Independent School District, was on her afternoon route when she noticed a pit bull attacking a girl. Officials say that the driver immediately stopped her bus, grabbed a bucket and ran to the girl’s defense.

Alabama district reverses decision to end bus service

The service for regular-education students at Hoover City Schools was set to end with the 2014-15 school year, but Superintendent Andy Craig and school officials are now exploring ways to continue offering the service with the district’s own bus fleet and drivers and to charge students a fee to ride the bus. Craig says that the ability for the district to both receive state allocation for transportation and collect fees from bus riders was the primary factor in this latest decision.

State directors to develop training guidelines for seat belts

In response to NTSB recommendations, NASDPTS says it will develop guidelines to assist schools in training bus drivers, students and parents on “the importance and proper use” of various types of school bus seat belts. The state directors association says it will also develop educational materials on “lap and shoulder belts providing the highest level of protection for school bus passengers” — another NTSB recommendation.
