District board approves bus fees, pending court approval

Hoover (Ala.) City Schools' board votes to implement school bus ridership fees for the 2014-15 school year, pending approval by the U.S. District Court. In a memorandum proposing the fees, Superintendent Andy Craig says a fee-based system would help the district “address the financial challenges we are facing.”

Louisiana, Texas bus drivers honored by school risk programs

Lillie Lewis of the Tensas Parish School Board receives the 2013-14 Statewide Bus Driver of the Year award from the Property Casualty Alliance of Louisiana, and Shelley Wilkenson of Midlothian (Texas) Independent School District receives the award from the alliance's Texas chapter. Awards given through this program are based on such driver attributes as leadership, attitude, perseverance, student and parent relationships, and technical skill.

Florida school bus driver killed in crash

According to a preliminary police investigation, a Toyota Camry turned and struck a school bus, which veered off the road and into a pole. The bus driver, 65-year-old William Fowler II, did not survive the crash. The Toyota driver has been charged with DUI, authorities say.

Illinois bill would increase walking distance to 2 miles

School boards would be required to provide free transportation for students who live 2 miles or more from their assigned school, up from one and a half miles, under House Bill 5967. In a letter to a local newspaper, Illinois School Transportation Association President Patrick Johnson writes that the legislation would put “thousands of school children at risk, increase traffic congestion and harm the environment.”

STA wins 2 Pennsylvania contracts

The five-year agreements with both school districts — Hempfield School District and East Penn School District — will generate $10 million in new annualized revenue for the company starting next school year, officials say.
