Stop-arm awareness campaign launched in Ontario

After a student was within “inches of being hit” by a motorist passing one of her company’s school buses last fall, Kathleen Both, owner of M.L. Bradley Ltd., took action, working with the city of Ottawa and industry organizations to launch the “I Stop, You Stop” campaign. Road safety signs have been posted throughout the city, and a stop-arm camera pilot program is underway at her operation.

STI subsidiary unveils new transportation service

SchoolWheels Direct will provide its new direct-to-parent transportation service to charter and private schools in Charleston, S.C. Families with students enrolled at schools serviced by the subsidiary will now be able to sign up for the type of bus service they would like, choose a route, make payments and manage their account on the provider's website.

The school bus OEM will partner with Zonar Systems to provide factory-installed telematics features for Saf-T-Liner C2 models as standard equipment. The Zonar platform will have the ability to send and receive data from the engine as well as give insight on overall vehicle performance, driver behavior and monitoring of passengers through Thomas Built’s multiplex wiring system.

Louisiana school bus driver kidnapped at gunpoint

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, a 37-year-old man shows up at his ex-girlfriend’s residence on Monday morning and boards her school bus with a firearm as she is about to start her route. The man allegedly demands at gunpoint that the woman drive to his house and then forces her inside, but he reportedly releases her as police arrive.

Nebraska state pupil transportation director Russ Inbody passes

Inbody, who worked for the Nebraska Department of Education for 37 years, died last month after a long illness. Nebraska Council of School Administrators officials call Inbody "an invaluable resource and support for school districts in his work in school finance, transportation services and negotiating the ever-complicated [school finance] formula."

10 dead in motorcoach-FedEx truck crash

The bus is traveling on a freeway and carrying high school students on their way to California’s Humboldt State University for a tour when the FedEx semi-truck crosses the freeway’s median and collides with the bus. The drivers of both vehicles, three chaperones and five students are killed. The California Highway Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.
