In publicizing their transportation departments, many school districts have learned to take advantage of the Internet. One of the benefits of having a Webpage for your operation is that it provides a forum for presenting specific information to the public on various transportation issues. The information serves as a resource to those curious about safety regulations, bus routes, fees and other related subjects. It also cuts down on repetitive parent requests for “simple answers.” The Irvine (Calif.) Unified School District has a transportation Website with a Frequently Asked Questions page. Here’s a sample of some of the questions that are included: Q. Why do I have to pay to ride the bus? A. Because state funding does not pay for the entire cost of transporting students. Q. How can I get a bus pass? A. By completing an application and paying for the pass. Q. Do I have to buy an annual pass? A. No, passes are available for the year, semester or quarter. Q. How does a person qualify for reduced rates? A. Total family income must be below $20,000 per year. The application must be confirmed by pay stubs and tax returns from the year of application. Q. Does a child have to carry the bus pass at all times? A. Yes, and it must be legible for the driver to read the stamps on it.
