EPA alleges excessive idling, fines bus company $33K

School bus operator North Reading Transportation will pay the penalty to settle EPA allegations that it violated federally enforceable motor vehicle idling limits in Massachusetts. EPA officials say that the company has responded quickly and has already implemented a number of idle-reduction measures.

Online option offered for Oklahoma recertification requirement

School Training Solutions has released an online curriculum to help Oklahoma school bus drivers meet a new recertification requirement that the State Department of Education instituted. Drivers whose certification has expired for more than a year can purchase and take these online courses through the Oklahoma Association for Pupil Transportation.

200 more students to get bus service in Hawaii

Beginning in November, the State Department of Education's "Get on Board" pilot program will provide school transportation to about 200 more students. The first phase of the initiative restored service to about 350 students at the beginning of the school year.

2 dogs shot by police near school bus stops

Richmond (Va.) Police Department officers respond to the scene after receiving a report of a dog bite with injury. While waiting for Animal Care and Control to respond, the dogs continue to run in the area where children are gathering at the bus stops, and they charge at an officer, who fires twice, killing one of the dogs.

Review of accidents finds school buses safe

The Democrat and Chronicle reviews three years’ worth of data from the New York Department of Education on school bus crashes and injury accidents, finding that the greatest danger to students comes from other motorists. For example, in 51 of the local crashes, or 30%, buses were rear-ended, most often by a motorist who failed to notice the school bus stopped in the roadway for students to disembark, or at the railroad crossing in front of them.
