RICHMOND, Va. — Two dogs were shot near school bus stops here after police officers received a report of a dog bite with injury.

Officers arrived at the scene on Thursday morning within a few minutes of receiving the report and found an individual who had been bitten by one of the dogs and was pinned against a building by two large dogs.

The man was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Several officers then rounded up children in the area waiting at bus stops and safely got them on other buses or back home to their parents.

While waiting for Animal Care and Control to respond, officials said the dogs continued to run toward and in the area where children were gathering at school bus stops.

An officer distracted the dogs, and at that point they charged the officer. The officer then determined he could safely stop the threat and took action: He fired twice and struck both dogs, killing one of them.

The incident is being investigated by the department’s internal affairs unit, and the dogs have been turned over to Animal Care and Control.

City spokesman Mile Wallace told WTVR that both animals will be sent to the state lab for rabies testing.
