Conference to provide insight on travel instruction

Boy honored for efforts to improve safety at bus stop

Ten-year-old Sterling Vieau conducts a survey to tally how many vehicles did and did not stop at the intersection where his school bus stop is located, and he finds that 67% of the vehicles did not stop, despite posted signs. The San Bernardino County (Calif.) Sheriff's Department presents him with a certificate, and deputies also issue citations to motorists at the intersection.

District changes procedures after 2 preschoolers left on buses

The Delaware district is investigating the separate incidents to determine why the district’s child-check procedures were not followed. New procedures have also been implemented to prevent future occurrences, including taking a roster of bus passengers that can be passed on to teachers for them to compare it against students who are in class.

Texas district to equip buses with stop-arm cameras

The Georgetown Independent School District and the Georgetown Police Department partner with road safety camera provider American Traffic Solutions to crack down on illegal passing of school buses. A statewide survey in Texas last year found 9,825 instances of stop-arm running in one day.

District may invest $1M annually toward new buses

South Carolina’s Horry County Schools is considering making the investment each year until 2019 under a proposal set forth by the district’s chief officer for support services. The proposal was made to get the buses in the fleet under 15 years old to reduce breakdowns and repairs. No final decisions will be made until the district learns whether it will receive additional funding from the state.

Indiana district gives 3-year notice to end bus service

The Decatur Township school board passes a resolution to notify the Indiana Department of Education that it may terminate transportation services in 2017. Superintendent Matt Prusiecki says that "unfortunately, due to our financial situation, this is a cut we need to consider," but it could be avoided if local voters pass a property tax increase.

Ice, snow cited as factors in 2 school bus crashes

Police say that no children were injured in the separate incidents, which both happened on Friday in southern Indiana. In one crash, a minivan hit a patch of ice and slid into a school bus. In the other, a bus slid off a roadway and into a ditch.

Cooperative helps districts save money, time

Walla Walla (Wash.) School District won matching funds from the state to obtain funds for a facility to support a cooperative that serves three school district transportation departments, and it hasn't cost taxpayers additional tax dollars. The Southeast Washington Transportation Cooperative provides vehicle maintenance at a fraction of the cost of local shops as well as a driver training program that saves districts staff and time.
