NTSB issues preliminary report on motorcoach-FedEx truck crash

The FedEx truck, traveling southbound on Interstate 5, drove through the center median and entered the northbound traffic lanes of the interstate, where it collided with a passenger car, which rotated counterclockwise and departed the highway. The FedEx vehicle then hit the motorcoach, both vehicles departed the highway and a post-crash fire ensued.

Children of bus driver in California crash speak of mother’s heroism

Jordan and Jordayna Lealao-Taiao say that survivors of the tour bus-FedEx truck crash on April 10 tell them that they might not have survived if it wasn’t for their mother. Jordan adds that the investigation into the collision so far seems to indicate that his mother brought the impact of the crash onto her side of the bus.

The bus is traveling on a freeway and carrying high school students on their way to California’s Humboldt State University for a tour when the FedEx semi-truck crosses the freeway’s median and collides with the bus. The drivers of both vehicles, three chaperones and five students are killed. The California Highway Patrol and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident.

NHTSA issues final rule requiring seat belts on motorcoaches

The rule, which amends FMVSS 208, applies to new over-the-road buses and to other types of new buses with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 26,000 pounds, except transit buses and school buses. Requiring seat belts could reduce fatalities by up to 44% and reduce the number of moderate to severe injuries by up to 45%, according to NHTSA.

NTSB cites driver fatigue, lax oversight in fatal crash

A motorcoach operated by Sky Express Inc. struck a cable barrier and overturned last May, killing four passengers. The agency finds that the driver's schedule limited his opportunity for sleep in the 72 hours leading up to the crash, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration repeatedly failed to enforce safety regulations against Sky Express.
