Analysis finds buses speeding in school zones

Automated speed cameras are installed in school zones in Baltimore, and $40 tickets are issued to vehicles recorded driving at least 12 mph over the speed limit. The Baltimore Sun reports that county public school buses have triggered the cameras more than 100 times in the past two years, privately owned buses have received at least 800 citations and city-owned buses have accumulated more than 50.

Calif. district extends busing through 2nd semester

School bus service to geographically remote areas will continue through the end of the school year at Lake Elsinore Unified School District. The board had earlier approved temporary bus service, for the first semester, for nearly 2,200 students who live in remote areas.

Bill would require alcohol interlocks on school buses

The breath test device links to a vehicle’s ignition system and prevents it from starting if alcohol is detected in the driver’s breath. Under the legislation, all school buses manufactured after July 1, 2013, for use in New York state would be required to come equipped with the device.

Driver contest winner goes extra mile for students

Michigan school bus driver Dawn Lemaster makes riding the bus fun and educational with an on-bus quiz game, a bus safety program and a portable library that encourages kids to read on the bus. She was nominated in the Thomas Built Buses Children’s Choice essay contest by 10-year-old Charlotte, who says she was “the most fun, loving, caring and awesome bus driver I’ve ever had!”
