KENT, Wash. — Kent School District was recently awarded the annual Don Carnahan Memorial Grant from Zonar Systems and will use the $50,000 to install GPS tracking devices from the company on all of its school buses.
The GPS tracking device, which provides real-time information on the transportation of students to and from school, is currently installed on 10 of the district’s buses, according to a news release from the district. The remaining 136 buses will be installed with the device through the grant.
One factor that prompted the GPS installation on all the buses was an incident in which a kindergartner was mistakenly dropped off at the wrong stop and was missing for hours, KING 5 News reports.
Knowing the exact location of the buses and how fast they are going will make every mile of the 1.7 million traveled annually by the district’s buses that much safer for students, district officials said.
