CANTON, Ohio — Police here told The CantonRep that late Monday or early Tuesday, thieves climbed a fence, cut the barbed wire, stole 18 batteries from Canton City School District school buses and sold them to a local scrap business. The bus garage director discovered that the batteries were missing.
Lt. James Cole told the newspaper that police have suspects, but no one has been arrested. He added that the batteries were disconnected rather than cut and none of the battery cables were damaged. Fourteen of the batteries were recovered from Jeffco Metals.
The theft did not disrupt any school activities, according to Canton City School District spokeswoman Lisa Reicosky. She told The CantonRep that this is most likely the first time batteries have been stolen from the bus garage.
