AUSTIN, Texas — Last Friday, Gov. Rick Perry vetoed a bill that would prohibit diesel-powered school buses from idling while parked at a school or a school-related event.
However, the bill also stipulates that drivers can idle their buses for a short period of time directly before departures to allow for heating or cooling, provided that the engine is off when students are entering and exiting the bus.
In his veto statement, Perry said educators should focus on more "pressing" issues, such as operating after-school programs and after-hour tutoring services.
"If schools believe they should also regulate and enforce school bus idling polices, I think they should do so, not because it is mandated by the state, but because they have chosen to do so as a matter of policy decided on the local level," Perry said
